Projector Calibration

Seeing first hand what is achievable from a standard sub £1k projector when run through the D65 calibration process is really quite an eye opener. If you thought that having your projector calibrated by a professional was just a fool's game, a way of the seller taking your hard earned cash, then think again!

A selection of images from one of our 720p calibrated projectors have been put together, they have not been doctored nor has any trickery been used, just a few hours for the calibration process. This brought the projector to as near D65 as was capable. Both photos were taken in our demonstration room within 15 seconds of each other so no outside conditions could or did have any effect on the images, as you can see the calibrated image on the left is far superior to that of the projected image without any calibration carried out on the right.

We’ll concentrate on one small shot from this film, it has so much going on in terms of detail, that you may find it quite surprising. Look at the images at the top of this page, the one on the left, already you can see that this image has a darker more 3D feel to it and as you may have already guessed, this is the projected image with the D65 calibration. In comparison, the wishy-washy image on the right is the standard image.

Again on the left, take a closer look into the image, at the lady’s face deep into the shot. On the un-calibrated projector she looks a little washed out! Her defining features are almost gone. there is just a bright creamy effect which is her face.

As you can see with the calibrated insert her nose structure and cheekbones are defined to the point that they are almost jumping out at you. She looks like a real person instead of someone who has been drawn in pastels just for this photo shoot.

This small section of the larger picture shows what a difference a calibration service can have on your home theatre projector. If you thought, “Well I’ve had my projector pretty close to that”. If so you have been very lucky, it is almost impossible to calibrate a projector to D65 with the rack of your eye. With just so many variables as room environment, equipment, screen and the unthinkable amount of configuration for colour available. You can see why we say this.

Another section of the scene we have the vase that is featured to the right of the image. Look at how the graduations of black detail actually create a real tactile, 3D effect against that of the almost grey image of non-calibrated unit. To have achieved such a black colour scope from this calibrated projector is truly remarkable. Again it really emphasises what a projector can achieve when it has been calibrated to the industry standard D65. It creates the full picture without compromise.
