Seeing first hand what is achievable from a projector when run through the D65 calibration process is really quite an eye opener. Calibration is the optimization of the projector to reproduce the information from the video sources, for example a Blu-ray player. This results in the colour and the detail together with the light, matching that of a film theatre.

There are five main elements in calibration - maximizing contrast ratio, optimizing the gray scale, the gamma curve and the colour reproduction and lastly flat field uniformity.

If you thought, “Well I’ve had my projector pretty close to that”. If so, you have been very lucky, it is almost impossible to calibrate a projector to D65 just with the rack of your eye.
