Mordaunt Short Genie, a classic in the making?
Mordaunt Short can hardly be awarded the prize for originality, the market is
awash with silver sub/sat systems that look quite tasty and do their job well
enough. But the Genie is different, and mighty ambitious, for the all conquering
KEF KHT2005.2 is it's prey and that requires more than good looks. To explain
the KEF is something of a legend, the sonic qualities of it's parabolic 'eggs'
are legendary, real audiophile stuff. The MS Genie attempts to beat the KEF
at it's own game, and, to a large extent succeeds. The Genie is a newer product
than the KEF and it wouldn't test the bounds of plausability to imagine lots
of MS people deconstructing KEF KHT systems and probing their every characteristic.
The result is something quite predictable, but nontheless excellent. Clean,
detailed & bags of resolution the long run in time rewarded handsomely. The
Genies do sound marginally better than the KEF's and the sub is certainly meatier,
this is something MS can be extremely proud of. The Mordaunt Short Genies provide
class leading performance, great build and quirky 'marmite like' (love em or
hate em) looks, and we heartily recommend them as a worthy contender for your
cash if you are in the market for a audiophile quality discrete speaker package.
