A tale of three technologies
Home cinema projectors fall roughly into three categories: DLP, LCD and LCOS. These all provide stunning results, but each has a slightly different style of image.
LCD Projectors
Projector brands using liquid crystal display technology include: Mitsubishi and Panasonic
Simply put, LCD projectors work by splitting light from a projector bulb into three beams and passing this light through 3 LCD panels, red, green and blue. The LCD panels contain crystals which behave differently when an electric charge is applied, allowing for adjustment of the colours. This light is then directed out of the projector and onto the screen thus creating the image.
LCD home cinema projectors provide extremely cost effective, high resolution, visually stunning images. Some of the best selling examples include the Mitsubishi HC6800 and Panasonic PTAE4000 Projectors.
DLP Projectors
Projector brands using digital light processing display technology include: Mitsubishi, Optoma, Themescene, InFocus, Sim2 and Projectiondesign
DLP home cinema projectors work by utilising a digital mirror device (DMD). It's quite a simple concept really, a chip containing tiny mirrors (how many depends on the resolution of the projector) has a voltage applied to each individual mirror, making them 'tilt'. Light is reflected from these mirrors through a spinning 'colour wheel' (the number of segments in the colour wheel depends on the individual machine) and there you have it! It's not actually that simple but you get the idea!
DLP home cinema projectors give really 'top notch' performance, with a very smooth, 'filmic' picture quality. Best sellers include the Optoma Themescene HD20.
LCOS - D-ILA Projectors

Projector brands using liquid crystal on silicon display technology include: JVC and Sony
LCOS technology can be best described as a hybrid between LCD and DLP technology. LCD technology uses liquid crystals, which light passes through to generate the colours in the image; DLP reflects light off tiny mirrors, one for each pixel. LCOS combines these two methods by applying liquid crystals to a mirror substrate. As the liquid crystals open and close, the light is either reflected from the mirror below, or blocked. This modulates the light and creates the image.
The main advantages of LCOS technology are high resolution and an almost non-existent pixel structure (the visible lines-the pixel grid). This gives a very smooth and natural looking image, giving a cinematic feel. Plus, the LCOS technology doesn’t use a spinning colour wheel like DLP.
There are variations of the LCOS technology, for example JVC's D-ILA, uses the same basic principals as LCOS but does not use organic material, which can decay over time, giving the projector a greater lifespan. The D-ILA technology also allows for greatly improved contrast, much like a DLP projector.
Future proof projectors 1080p/24fps - Blu-ray

Typically, all our projectors now include high performance connections such as HDMI and can generally support a 1080p/24fps high definition input. The JVC DLA HD990, Themescene HD86 and Mitsubishi HC6800 are three examples of full high definition projectors. One of the UK's favourite Projector is the fabulous Panasonic PTAE4000 which is asserted itself as the most popular 1080p/24fps projector around.
As technology does not stand still for very long, JVC, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Projectiondesign, Sim2 and Themescene have worked to support full high definition 24fps and 'XVColor' technologies, providing projectors at new ground breaking prices.
Another new exciting technology to hit the market is LED projection. The new Sim2 Multimedia Mico 50 LED Projector (which can be view on our premium website) uses LED as a light array system-a brand new concept that promises much higher lifespan than standard lamp projectors. With an estimated lifespan of approximately 50,0000 hours LED lamp usage, you can be prepared for years of entermainment.
